Known for its world class Horse Racing Track, Ruidoso Downs is located in the heart of the Lincoln National Forest. A city within Lincoln County New Mexico, Ruidoso Downs consists of about 2,000 residents. Once known only as Ruidoso Village, Ruidoso Downs now is a suburb of Ruidoso and is a part of the Ruidoso Metropolitan Statistical Area.

On October 9—11, 2009, the twentieth annual Lincoln Cowboy Symposium was held at Ruidoso Downs. The event celebrated the ranching lifestyle, with demonstrations in horsemanship, shooting, roping, cooking, and blacksmithing. Booths offered western-style arts and crafts. Music and poetry were highlights of the festival, which featured performers Leon Rausch, Tommy Allsup, and the Texas Playboys; Mel Tillis and the Statesiders; Larry Gatlin; Billy Mata, and Liz Talley. Gospel artists also performed.
Ruidoso Downs Race Track is home to annual live racing from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Their exciting summer races take place Friday through Monday with a 1:00 PM post time, with the exception of some holidays, special meets, and horse sales.
The Hubbard Museum of the American West is a monument to times and places that reflect the Old West. Visitors actually participate in the exhibit as if they are passing through various portals of time encompassing three area cultures — Native American, Hispanic and Pioneer. It is a living, exciting experience that has something for everyone. The Hubbard Museum of the American West provides an entertaining and educational look at Ruidoso's past and the spectacle of the American West as it was in pioneer days.
The Billy the Kid National Scenic Byway is a round trip back in time to follow the ghosts of famous lawmen, outlaws, and soldiers. This 84-mile scenic loop follows through the rugged back country of the million-acre Lincoln National Forest. This land is rich in history and studded with a variety of attractions, museums, dining establishments and more!
The Lincoln National Forest is a protected national forest in the State of New Mexico in the southwestern United States. It was established in 1902 and covers 1,103,828 acres. It was named in honor of Abraham Lincoln and is the birthplace of Smokey Bear. Forest headquarters are in Alamogordo, New Mexico. There are local ranger district offices in Carlsbad, Cloudcroft, and Ruidoso.
